FAQs
-
How do I get a quote from you?Just submit your DXF or STEP file to us via the "Get A Quote" link. Specify the material, thickness, quantity and any special considerations or drawings that need to accommodate your file. If your part requires design alterations for manufacturing, such as fixing open vectors, or adjusting internal radiuses, we would, upon approval, bill those services at our Design and Consultation rate. We can not provide a quotation for a part if a feature isn't properly described or if there are errors in the file without first correcting issues in the file.
-
How are design and consultation services billed? We bill this service at $105 per hour for Staff Designers and $145 for Senior Designers. Most projects can be tackled at the Staff Designer Rate. Newer customers will be billed at shorter intervals, or, if negotiated, in blocks of service. You may cease our design and consultation services at any time. Work provided to that point will be released upon payment of services rendered.
-
What is included in your design and consultation services? We can provide a range of engineering services at our hourly rate. This includes file and drawing preparation, cut file clean-up, design for manufacturing reviews, product design, custom machine design, and many other services.
-
My part only is "2D" because it contains through holes or no holes at all, no pockets, and no chamfers or radii. What format should I submit to MakeMyParts.com?A DXF file is preferred for this type of part. If any holes are to be tapped please include a drawing to designate the tapped holes.
-
My part has pockets, blind holes, chamfers, or other "2.5D" or "3D" features. What should I submit to MakeMyParts.com?A STEP file is preferred for this type of part. If any holes are to be tapped please include a drawing to designate the tapped holes. A drawing is welcomed in this situation.
-
How quickly will you quote me?We are committed to providing a response to your request for quotation within one business day. Often we will provide you a quotation within that time period. Other times we may ask for clarifying information to best serve you. If your part does not fit our manufacturing processes or the files are not acceptable we may simply decline to quote.
-
Are there quantity minimums or maximums for my order? We will accept orders for as few as one part or as many as you need made. We have broad capabilities and capacity.
-
Is my file safe with you? Will you ever sell it or share it?Your design is safe in our hands. We will never sell your design. We will only use it for the purpose of making your part. Your files are stored safely and will be deleted from our systems upon your request.
-
Is MakeMyParts.com willing to sign an NDA?Due to the time and resources required to review legal agreements, we will not review or sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement prior to accepting your part files. As a matter of policy, we would only share part files with a manufacturing partner for the express purpose of manufacturing your part in case we couldn't make it in our own facility. Most parts are made in our own facility, however, so we are usually the only ones that will ever see your file. We are in the business of helping you succeed by making great parts and our reputation depends on confidentiality.
-
How long will it take to get my order? This depends on a few factors such as the complexity of the part, which materials we have in stock, and our production schedules. Some parts will get manufactured the next day while others will have a lead time of a few weeks. We will specify a lead time estimate in your quotation. This is only an estimate and may vary based on supplier disruptions, unexpected machine downtime, or other factors beyond our control. We pride ourselves on getting your parts to you quickly.
-
I don't have a digital file. Can you still make my part?We require a proper digital file to provide a quote. We can offer you design services for a fee. An experienced designer will work with you to make the best, lowest cost part to achieve your design goals.
-
How do I pay for my order? When we submit your quotation, we will also provide you with an invoice to give you an option to pay. If you accept the quotation, simply pay the invoice and we will receive notification and begin producing your parts. If you do not wish to complete the order, simply ignore the invoice.
-
Do I have to pay before I get my parts? Can I cancel the order? You must submit your payment at the time of quote acceptance. Our production process begins when you submit your payment. There is a significant amount of time that goes into ordering your material (if not in stock), cutting larger blanks to size, programming our machines to cut your part, and then manufacturing the part. Due to the amount of time that goes into each step of the process, we will not cancel any order or refund any payment. All accepted and paid orders are final.
-
Do you ship internationally? We ship to almost anywhere in the world. The shipping price will be provided in the quotation and is based on your location and the size and weight of the parts.
-
Can I send in my own material for you to machine? We prefer to provide the material and will only accept a client's material in very rare circumstances. We often cut your parts from larger sheets with parts for other customers nested along side it. This helps keep costs low for everyone. Accepting small pieces of material would make operations inefficient and prices higher.
-
What tolerances will my parts be manufactured to?The standard tolerance of milled, turned, and routed parts will be +-0.005" per 12" if not explicitly stated otherwise in our Quotation. This means that a feature designated as 1" wide in the file may come in at 0.995" or 1.005". Often, milled or turned parts will actually be within 0.001" or less of the modeled dimension, but this is not guaranteed unless explicitly stated in our quotation. Waterjetted parts, on the other hand, will often lack concentricity in small holes and will have a tolerance of +-0.012" per 12". This means a waterjetted part that has a feature designated as 1" wide in the file may come in at 0.988" or 1.012". Our waterjet is a state of the art, dynamic head, hyper-pressure machine so waterjetted parts will often come in closer than this.
-
Can you make parts for a firearm?Due to regulations, we can not manufacture any firearm, flamethrower, or explosive device parts. This policy excludes everything from finishing 80% AR lowers to simple scope rings. We'd love to help you make any part, but we must abide by regulations.
